Canadian Blended Whisky
Red Dog carries many Canadian Whisky brands from Canadian Club to Crown Royal and many others in between. Canadian Whiskies are a blend of corn or wheat, with a supplement of rye, barley, or barley malt that are produced in Canada. They are stereotypically smoother than other whiskies (of course some can be more robust) and tend to be sweeter than other blends when rye is used in the blend.
Canada doesn’t dictate the percentages of grains used in the mash bill, so unless the brand tells you the mash bill, it’s a mystery. Unlike Bourbons, they are aged, primarily in used oak barrels for at least three years. Most brands that find their way to America are aged for no more than four years and are blends of barrels of different ages, with no more than 9.09% of flavoring ingredients like caramel that give the Whisky a darker color than some Whisky.
Bulk Canadian Whisky is usually shipped in barrels to their destination country where they are bottled at 80 proof with no more than four years of age. “Bottled in Canada” whiskies generally have older components in their blends and are bottled at 43.4% ABV (86.8 proof).
